The project could bring stability to the looming food security crisis from impacts of climate change.

Nanoracks has partnered with Abu Dhabi Investment Office to open a space farming research center. Here, resilient crops will be flown into space and tested for their ability to grow in arid conditions in space and on earth. These space greenhouses would contain space-mutated crops that have similar DNA mutations as genetically-modified organisms. GMO DNA are typically built to have higher pest resistance, drought resistance, and increased yields. Research for space-mutated crops will include mutations for food production in extreme conditions. Though climate change mitigation is a top-priority right now, it’s pretty cool to look forward to our food being stamped with “Made in Space”.

Could space greenhouses solve Earth’s food crisis?
