The Moon’s ‘Golden Handle’

Looking for a stellar view this weekend? You’re in luck! The “golden handle” will be visible in the northwest section of the Moon along the Terminator Line – the line dividing the light side of the moon and the dark side of the moon – on Saturday, July 9th.

The golden handle is a lunar light phenomenon that occurs when sunlight hits the Montes Jura Mountain Range at a low angle, causing the mountain range to glow in stunning detail. The effect makes for a great opportunity to view some significant mountain features that reach into the Sinus Iridum (or Bay of Rainbows), including the famous mermaid’s head in the west. Grab your telescope and/or binoculars this weekend and bask in the glow of these amazing lunar landscapes!
