The “Impossible” Galaxies

New data from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has stumped scientists. JWST recently spotted six galaxies from our universe’s infancy that are very different from other galaxies from the same era. Instead of being small and populated with young blue stars as scientists predicted, these six “impossible” star systems are 50 times more massive and contain older red stars.

Astronomers will focus JWST back on these galaxies to collect the light spectra to determine physical and chemical properties of these puzzling star systems. Once the spectra are obtained, scientists will be able to ascertain how much of our current theories revolving around the start of our universe need to be updated.
