Space Fact of the Week
1 Year in Space - Identical Twin Study Findings
Mark and Scott Kelly are identical twins, and both are astronauts! As an attempt to study the effects of space travel on the human body, Scott spent 340 days aboard the International Space Station while his brother stayed on Earth as a control subject. Overall, the study found that Scott's body changed to accommodate space flight, and most biological changes returned back to normal once he landed back on Earth.
These long-term space travel studies are essential for determining how humans will fare in missions to the Moon, Mars, and beyond.
