Space Fact of the Week
OSIRIS-REx Gets a Boost from Earth
NASA's OSIRIS-REx spacecraft, launched in 2016, will make its way back to Earth just close enough to generate enough momentum to "slingshot itself" towards the intended asteroid Bennu. The probe will get as close as 11,000 miles above Earth at 10:52 am MST and will only be visible through a telescope before making the 140-million-mile trip to the asteroid. OSIRIS-REx will reach Bennu in August 2018 to begin its 505-day study, mapping the surface and collecting samples to return back to Earth in 2023.
Red Canyon was proud to be a part of this mission last year by working on the spacecraft and also attending the launch. We are excited to continue to watch the progress and success of this important spacecraft!
